It makes the election of School Boards compulsory, and provides a time-table for religious teaching, to b,e settled by the majority. Measures for the regulation of mines, the prevention of contagious diseases, and the better protection of women, have been introduced. The Nonconformists' Burial Bill has passed the second reading. Mr Stansfield has introduced a Public Health Bill. A discussion took place on the importation of coolies from China and Persia, which was strongly condemned. It is proposed to introduce a Bill authorising the appointment of a Commission of Enquiry into the causes of the failure of the Albert and European Life Assurance Companies. Lord Hobart is to be appointed Governor of Madras. Trouble is brewing in all the large towns of England on the Education question. The Duke of Newcastle and Mr Akroyd have withdrawn from the Liberal party. The Judicial Committee have auspenderi the Rev. Mr Purchas, of Brighton, for twelve months. He has sequestrated his property for the payment of the costs of the case, which exceed £2000. The Oxford and Cambridge boat-race is fixed to take place on March 23rd. An international football match took place on March sth, and England won. A fatal explosion occurredat the Caversham powder mills. March 12. The Prince and Princess of Wales went to the Continent on the 9th. The Army Estimates have been discussed in the House pf Commons. Amendments by Mr Holmes, reducing the army by 20,000 men, and by Mr Muntz, reducing it by 10,000, were both rejected. The Prince of "Wales has visited the Assembly at Versailles. Mazziui is dead. The jury stopped the Tichborne trial on the sth. At the request of Serjeant Ballantine, the court was adjourned for one day, when a non. suit was accepted, after consultation with Mr Giffard. Chief Justice Bovill ordered the plaintiff to be taken into custody for perjury, and detained in Newgate till the next session of the Criminal Court, unless bail to the amount of £5,000 were offered. The Government has undertaken the prosecution. The prisoner was unbailed up to the 10th. London, March 14. Several witnesses prove the Tichborne claimant to be Arthur Orton. The judge has refused the offered bail, and will consent to the prosecution for perjury 1 3-day. The English Ministry is considering the American reply to Earl Granvilie's note. M. Thiers has given notice of the termination of the commercial treaty.
