STOCK REPORT.

The stock market daring the past month has undergone little or no alteration. Store sheep of all descriptions continue in good demand, but xery few have been offering- Cross-bred wethers, 2, 4, and 6 tooth, would meet with purchasers at from 6s to 6s 6d ; merino do, same ages, are worth 5b ; fall-mouthed merino do, 49 3d to 4s 6d ; do eweß, 3s 3d to 3s 6d. Half-bred Lincoln or Leicester ewea (good mouths) have changed hands during the month at prices varying from 8s 6d to 10b, according to number and quality ; fat wethers may be quoted at 2d per lb for prime quality. The cattle market is inclined to improve, in consequence of the Win ton Meat Preserving Company's intention to stait operations immediately, and the Woodlands Company having made a slight advance in their prices. Store bullocks, from 3 to 6 years old, are saleable at from £4 4s to £3 10s ; spayed cows, £3 15s to £3 ss. Mixed cattle show little improvement, and may be quoted from £3 to £2, according to proportion of steers. Station properties, in consequence of the rise in the price of wool, have improved considerably , in value, and several sales have taken place ( privately, the prices being withheld, but we are ( Jed to believe they are highly satisfactory. Messrs G-. F. Martin & Co. of 17 head unbroken colts and fillies was held during the month, when all were quitted at an average of £6 per head, which may be taken as a fair Quotation for light stock. For draught etock there is no enquiry.

D. Macrorie, Auctioneer, reports : — The yards were fairly attended on Saturday, but there was no demand for either dairy stock or horsr sat the reserve?. The spring cart turnout, asnin placed in the market, did not find a purchaser, but I sold one of the new imported dog carts (four-wheeled) for £25, and the Willcox and Gibbs's sewing machine at £9 I had a large number of enquiries for stock, both sheep and cattle, of ;every description, during the week, but offers are still pending. Invercargill, 11th March, 1872.

Messrs Or. F. Martin and Co. report — On Saturday, the 9th inst., we submitted at the Club Hotel, Mr John Russell's sawmill property, consisting of 140 acres of valuable freehold, 20 h.p. engine, and all the necessary plant for sawmill purposes. The attendance was good, but the number of bidders limited. The property wa3 started at £300, and quickly run up in £10 bids to £570, the hammer falling to the bid of Mr J. R. Cuthbertson — a dead bargain. The entire horse Young Leamington, sold under a distress warrant, was knocked down at the low figure of £20. The sale of goods, grain, &c, at Messrs Cochran and Blackwood's stores attracted a large attendance, and the lots were quitted at satisfactory prices. We sold 200 bushels oats at from Is 7d to Is 5d ; 12 bags damaged flour from 18s 6d to 15s per bag ; colonial bacon, 3d to 6d per lb ; do cheese, 3d to 4d. We have also to report the sale privately, on account of Mr Alex. Smith, of One Tree Point, of one ram and two ewes, pure bred Leicesters, at £10 each ; also the sale of 7 Hampshire Down sheep at £4 each. Invercargill, March 9, 1872.

Mr F. R. White, forwarding agent, Winton, reports that the rate of cartage from Winton to Kingston is from £i to £2 10a per ton, the railway carriage from the Bluff to Winton being 10s. Goods landed at the Bluff are forwarded to their destination without loss of time, and a considerable saving in the matter of handling is effected by adopting this route.
