MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The Council met last evening. Present — The Mayor, and Councillors Lumaden, Ross, Gartbwaite, Pratt, Blackwood, Goodwillie, and Tapper. After the reading of correspondence, His Worship was authorised to purchase a safe for the use of the Council.Councillor Goodwillie brought up the following report of the Finance Committee, and moved its adoption, which Councillor Blackwood seconded : — Your Committee have to report that having carefully considered the financial position of the Council, they are of opinion that in order to carry out many necessary public works, including an expen iiiure of a sum not greater than £300 on the main drainage of the town, and the maintenance of a Fire Brigade and Cemetery, &c, &c, that a rate of not less than Is 9d in the £ should be the rate on the assessment for the present year. Councillor Lumsden moved as an amendment — " That the report be postponed until after the consideration of a letter from the Solicitor, advising the Council that the financial year commences on the 20fch of April, and endd on the 19th, and that it was competent for the Council to levy a rate on the present valuation for the present year ending 19th April, 1872." On being put this amendment was lost, and the original motion carried. The Council then went into committee. Councillor Lurasden moved, " That the rate on the assessment for the year ending 19th April, 1872, be and is hereby fixed at twenty one pence in the one pound." Councillor Blackwood moved as an amendment — " That the rate be 2s in the pound." Amendment carried. Certain amended conditions of sale of Tay-street reserve having been adopted, it was resolved that the 24th April be recommended to be fixed by the Superintendent as the day of sale, and, on returning into Council, the resolutions of the committee were confirmed. It was resolved that the last day for payment of the rate be fixed for 30th March. ______________
