COMMERCIAL.
Times Office, Monday Evening. Trade is moderately active, with a fair demand for general goods. The wool season, combined with the return of fine weather, has given an improving tone to the markets. The prospect of extensive public works being speedily commenced, coupled with the remoter prospect of a stream of immigration, encourages the belief that this improvement will be more permanent than the transitory activity of a seasonal trade. The produce market is without any material change in quotations- Oats, quoted at Is 9d to Is lOd, are in demand. The feeling of the trade generally is that a rise will shortly take place. This season's crop is reported to be deficient as an average yield. Wheat is also in demand at 4s 9d to ss, and barley at 2s 9d to 3s. Adelaide flour is scarce, and has advanced 20s ; colonial flour has also advanced 10s, and is firm at present rates. In general merchandise we quote white sugar scarce at £51 ; Company's No. 1, £55, and No. 2 £53, with an upward tendency. Hennessy's brandy in bulk 7s 6d ; do case, 29s 6d ; whisky, in bulk, 4s 9d ; do case, 14s 6d ; geneva, J.D.K.Z., 13s 6d ; jams, colonial, 7s 6d j do English, 10s to lls ; Tennant's ale, 12s ; Byass'a porter, lls ; Dublin stout, 12s 3d, candles, la o£d ; bacon 9 J ; hams, lOd. In teas the market is steady. Iron and bagging show an upward tendency. Stocks of all sorts are in moderate supply.
