THE VOLUNTEERS.

The firing for choice of Colonial representatives took place at the Butts, Invercargill, on Thursday, 18th ult., at 5 o'clock, with the following result : —

It will be observed from the foregoing that none of the competitors passed through the fir.*t stage. Invereargill will therefore be unrepresented. The Adjutant's parade took place last evening, when there was a good mnster of the corps. After performing a number of evolutions on the dri 1 ground, the volunteers marched through the town, being preceded by their Brass Band. On returning to the shed, Major Atkinson complimented them on the creditable muster, and the steady manner in which they had gone through the various movements, suggesting at the siime time that if they would turn out as well twice a month, it would give the officers and non-commissioned officers a better chance of attaining proficiency. The cadets were on the ground, and accompanied the volunteers in their march through the town. In addressing them, Major Atkinson said they required more practice in drill without arms, and consequently the arms would be taken from them in the meantime. He would recommend them to consider themselves above all other boys who were not cadets, and by their walk and manner show that they were a credit as volunteers. Major Atkinson intimated to the volunteers that he would be glad to see them turn out on Monday next, at 7 p.m., for the purpose of having another drill prior to his return to Dunedin. Great credit is due to Sergeant Major Paxton for the manner in which he has got the company worked up in their drill, considering the short time he has been their instructor.
