SOUTHLAND RAILWAYS.
We have been enabled to gather a few particulars regarding the railways — their traffic, working expenses, expense of management, &'c, for the year 2871. The total revenue for the year amounted to £6611 9a. That amount was made up as follows : — Receipts from 9816 passengers, £1928 1 4s ; do goods, £4185 17s ; do Bluff Jetty dues, £21 lls 9d ; do sundry accounts, £167 9s 7d ; do special trains, £7 16s. Under the following headings — maintenance of way and works, £2670 2s 7d ; locomotive power, &c.,£2211 12s 4d ; traffic charges, £1411 17s 2d— the total expenditure was £6293 12s Id, leaving a net profit for the year, after defraying all costs, of £317 16s lid. "The following are the items charged : — MAINTENANCE OP WAT AND "WOEES.
The total number of train miles run during the year was 28,230 ; the quantity of coals consumed, 5211 cwt. The coals consumed per train mile, 2067 lbs. The engines have been under steam for 3596 hours. During 1599 hours 47 minutes they were running, the average speed, including stoppases, being 176 miles per hour.
