MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.

The Council met last night. Present — The Mayor, and all the Councillors. After some preliminary business had been disposed of, a Public Works Report was read and submitted, recommending that the footpath on the west side of Dee street should be gravelled, the work to be done by tender. It further recommended that plans 2 and 3 for the drainage of the town should be adopted, the estimated price being £293. The first recommendation waa adopted, and th« second held over for further consideration. A Finance Committee report was read, making suggestions regarding the organisation of a Fire Brigade. It recommended the appointment of an engine-keeper i branch-man, coupling-man, and ten firemen at salaries amounting, together with incidental repairs, to £8S per annum. It also j recommended the appointment of two fire ' inspectors. After a brief discussion, the report was held over for consideration. A motion was tabled by Councillor G-arthwaite — That Mr M'Arthur, late clerk to the cemetery, should be communicated with requesting him to hand over the sum of £100 10s 6d in accordance with the communication from the Government. After discussion, the motion was carried. For the appointment of an auctioneer, it was resolved that a ballot should be taken. Councillor Lumsden moved as an amendment that the work be let by tender. The amendment was not seconded, and a ballot was taken, resulting in Mr G-. F. Martin being elected by a majority of one. The commission was fixed at 1 per cent.
