TIMARU.

The Herald of January 17th reports : —

. We are glad to be able to record a great improvement in general retail business during the past month, and still greater briskness may be expected as soon as harvest operations become general, and grain begins to come in. At the present time but little is doing in grain. Quotations (nominal) are as follows : — Wheat, 4s 6d to 5s per bushel ; oats, 2s 6d to 3s do; flour, £13 to £14 per ton ; sharps, £4 10s do ; bran, £3 do. We are informed that some lots of new oats have been offered at 2s, but we have heard of no purchases as yet, and in no instance, we believe, has any grain been threshed. For old wheat, of which there is but little, holders are asking 5s and 63.
