PA PER MAKING.

Sin, — It has often struck me as a great pity that some of our wealthy men here should miss the chance of adding to their wealth, and at the same time provide a little labor for the poor by the establishment of a paper mill in this locality. Such a manufactory once established would consume all our loasteflax, besides bringing into use many other substances which at present are treated as quite useless, such as the leaves of the fern tree, the cabbage tree, the bark of the ribbon-wood, or the whole tree, the white tussac, the carradie, and many other things which are now goiug to waste — and I need scarcely point out to you what a boon the manufacture of

paper on the spot would be to the Fourth Estate in particular, and to all who can read and cipher in general. A paper mill need not be a very expensive affair, and if established on the banks of the Makarewa or New River, might soon lead to our being exporters of paper, instead of depending upon our Victorian neighbors and others for that necessary of modern days. Trusting you may find space for this iv your widely-circulated journal. — I am, &c, Love Lkttee. Invercargill, 34th Jnn., 1872.
