ELBOW.
(FEOM OUH OW2f COERESPOKDENT.) January 11, 1872. Mr MeArthur has just finished the survey of our township (Elbow). Intending purchasers of allotment, residing in the district, are very anxious to hare the sale held on the ground, instead of at the Land Office, Invercargill. The Government, I have no doubt, will realise much more from the sale by holding it at the Elbow. Sheep shearing is nearly over in this district, Athol, and Mararoa. Sheepfarming in the latter district will not be remunerative this year, owing to the severe frost and snow during the lambing season. On Friday last, a man named John Connor was brought before the Lowther Court, charged with stealing a pocketbook containing one £5 note, four £1 notes, a sovereign, and five cheques for £35 14s 3d, from the Centre Hill Hotel, and the property of the landlord, Donald McLean. Connor slept at the hotel on the night of the robbery, and in the room where McLean left his coat, which contained the pocket-book. The matter was reported to the Lowther Police, Connor arrested, and the cheques recovered. He ■was brought up before Joseph Rogers, Esq., J. P., and remanded for a week. At the Nokomai, on the 2nd inst., a tea party was held at the schoolhouse in aid of the funds of that institution. Singing and dancing were kept up for the niyht. Every one present seemed to be well pleased with the night's amusement. Indeed, some complained of getting too much enjoyment for their 2s 6d. The Christmas and New Year's Sports at the Nokomaiwere very good, comprising horse racing, foot racing, jumping, quoit matches, pigeon shooting, and several other games new to all, I may say, but the prompter, " King " Coulam. Only one accident occurred during the sports, ■whereby a poor fellow, named O'Tool, had his shoulder dislocated. He was at once taken to Prankton Hospital. The holidays are over, and the miners at Nokomai, Dome Creek, Borack, and {Sterlings have resumed work with vigor.
