Tow has been briskly competed for, and all parcels offered have been taken off at an advance of 20s :to 30s per ton = for spinning purposes, it being found suitable for mixing with jute in the manufacture of some heavy fabrics. Present quotations are as follows: — Tow, £13 15s to £14 155 ; common to rough halfdressed flax, £12 to £14 ; good half-dressed, £15 to £16 ; three fourths dressed, £17 for ordinary to £23 for really good; fully 1 cleaned, £24 to £31 .per ton.; As mentioned in ; our last, it is very important that attention be paid to colour ; buyers look particularly to this, and will pay £3 to £5 per ton more for even parcels of pale color than for flax as well dressed, but dark or green. • , The New Zealand. Loan and Mercantile. Agency report, under samedate, as follow: — Since our last issue, dated 15th July, we Have to report very great depression in our market for this fibre. The sales for the month by public and private contract will amount to . about 1800 bales. Prices for the lower sorts continue to be very much depressed, and in some cases 40s to 60s per ton lower has been accepted to make sales. There is a fair enquiry for the very best 'sorts only, bnt prices are very irregular and barely up to previous rates. The war is having consider: able adverse influence, as the Continental demand has entirely ceased. - '
