A Domestic Lttxuby. — Of the halcyon says to arrive with the coming tide of Chinese emigration we have the following foreshadowing from a lady now living in Canton, who writes, on the subject: — " How our servants would enchant you ! Yesterday one of the boys, Wing, came into Mr C *s room, and in the deferential and quiet way common to all of them, said — 'Master, my likee go Pak Wan side, chin chin that grandfather ; to morrow can come back.' Fancy him a boy of about nineteen years, with bright and pleasant face, dressed in full white trousers, over which the stocking is drawn, and gartered just below the knee with a band of blue silk ; his shoes of black satin, with soles of felt an inch thick ; and a blue gown reaching to the knee, and with tremendously wide sleeves. The black tassels which adorn his glossy queue just clear the ground as he walks. His wages are $6 per month, and he boards and clothes himself. During this temperate weather he wears a little skull cap of : black satin with a blue satin crown. Of course I was all anxiety to know why he wanted to goto the White Cloud Hills (Pak Wan Shan), and had a dim perception of a pleasure excursion of somedescription, ana of course my conjectures were wrong, as they are about everything here. He wanted to perform his yearly devotion of the Worship of Ancestors, and as his ancestral tombs were on the White Cloud Hill side, thither he must bend his steps. He is back again to-day as good as gold." Just think of such a domestic luxury as that ; so much skill, cleanliness, politeness, - *nd good nature, at the moderate price of six dollars per month, and unlimited , supply of the same sort. Why it really affords hope of comfort. — New York Tones.
