MELBOURNE.
The Argus of the 27th ult.' reports :-— * ' ! Little of much interest has' transpired in the , import : market3 to-day, and no transactions of any. have been effected. [ Breadstuff's, mowing 1 to fbe favorable change i in the weather, have been particularly noted for want of anima _0n.;. : the larger buyers have not shown the .slightest ; desn*e ; to operate, and the demand -for - trade requirements has jbeen^ of the most limited - descripjffonT~lTevertEeless, we do not observe , .-t_»y«gns of prices giving way. : The Californian mail, just arrived,- brings advices not calculated to ; affect the niairket, either up or down.'. Holders' of flour are firm; at £13 to £13 10s. Several .;• moderate-sized parcels of Victorian wheat have been quitted at 6s. There is very little doing in oats ; good feeding samples are saleable at 3s 6d. Maize in the morning presented a firm aspect, but the arrival of two cargoes since has operated ' somewhat in favor of buyers, without, however, " causing any actual decline in price ; we continue • to' quote 4s 2d to 4s 3d. We note a very fair demand for sugar, trade . sales being very readily "effected, of all descriptions, at priceß ranging from _£3JJ_fqr brownj,£36 for good yellows,a_d up to £40 " for fine white crystals. In teas, the most prominent feature was theauction. sale this forenoon, when, nearly, 2,000 packages were cleared off, at pridSa which certainly show some improvement on thoparticular class of teas offered, consisting chiefly of low common descriptions ; 483 chests /^ljrought from 9Jd to Is o£d. Half-chests and •-boxes were disposed of at lOd to 13£ d. We observe that a further public sale of teas will be Wednesday next, when the balances of * the Constance's and the Gustav's cargoes, amonnt<~ing to 2,400 -packages, will be offered. We hear ~of>a veiyinuch improved inquiry springing up fordava. mill-driessed: rice.. Numerous Sales are effected at £19 lbs, 1 and should the demand be maintained, on "aßiinflar scale, the rice-dressers state they will be* compelled to raise the price. A small parcer of- tobacco was got rid of at auc...tion i. 32- packages were quitted. Twist, faulty, -i:_roughtllOfd-'to Is €jd; bars sold at Bid, and pounds at . 9£d. Timber bears a most unsatisfactory aspect, more especially deals, which have, been subjected to a further decline. Ex ■ Merrie Monarch and Peter Stuart, 452 red deals, DDD brand, 11 x 3, were quitted at 3d 15-16ths to 4d l-16th per. foot 9x3; 2954 pieces, 9x3, were placed at 3f dto 3d 13-16ths.
