COMMERCIAL.
The following are the Customs returns for the week ending July 30th, 1870 :—
D; Macbohie, Auctioneer, reports : — .• There has been more doing during the last month than advised in the last summary. As the spring approaches, we may look for increased business, the present state of the roads acting against present quotations, but already increased -confidence is noticeable, and- the province bears favorable comparison with other parts of New Zealand in.a commercial point of .view. , Cattle— -A* disposition to speculate *exjst3, and holders are getting firmer in their demands. JJuf?few transactions, except at the hammer, ■are Reported. Fat may be quoted at 20s t0, 22s per lOOlbs. I have placed under offer fat and stores, .half and half, at £4 10s, and other ■matters pending in . stores. Little demand for dairjr Btock. Hctsfis.— This- market is still, as regards weekly yard- sales, very inanimate. Little or .nothing j would- have been done, had not a large number of j ■unreserve_d been offered. - I have sold draughts at from £20~to £50, and unbroken hacks, averaging £7. ' •■ :. •, .. - "" Sheep. — Little, or nothing done, except privately. , 9a 6d has been paid in small lots for fat' wethers'. The operations of the Preserving Company are giving some renewed confidence to holders. . Properties. — I have sold a section in Tyne street for £50, and 893 acres on the Pourapourakino, one section of which realised 45s 6J, the remainder, 30s per acre. The sale of farm properties on the East Road last Saturday attracted a good number to the roomß. The disposal of the same was however undoubtedly marred by an alteration at the eleventh hour in the mode of offering, viz., changing from the division of the 200 acres into two lots, to putting it up as a whole. In this breach of the advertised programme, neither the vendor nor hi 3 agent were to blame, the necessity arising in the satisfaction of the mortgage. The bidding was started at 20s per acre, and in the absence of an advance a bid of £3 10s was made and declared on behalf of the vendor, at which the hammer fell, and consequently the hotel and 5 acres were withdrawn. I subsequently sold the whole, property in one lot at a trifle over £800, being at the rate of £3 per acre for the first, and £200^br-the iatter. - — c In the yards there were no buyers and no sales effected;
