Total, 164,277 bales. i , Mr Helmuth Schwartze reports " that the attendance of buyers was good throughout; ; Prices 'during the ;;fifst fortnight rose Id to 2d perlb, and for superior 2d to 3d per lb ; but at the close ' of the sales quotations returned to their i starting point. The general tendency of the market was towards improvement. The closing rates vary little from thosO of the preceding series of sales, but the average result shows an indisputable amelioration. Foreign buyers operated with exceptional vigor, and the quantity taken for export amounted to 90,000 to 95,000 bales. The European clips coming in June will prevent further improvement, but present rates will - probably be maintained for the itiext sales. - The arrivals for the June sales up to May 19 were — From New South Wales and Queensland, 34,735 bales; Victoria, 66,735; South i Australia, 20,712; Western Australia, 3,747; Tasmania, 6,752; New Zealand, : 28,938; Cape, 18,262; total, 180,000 . bales. The sales will commence on the 16th June." ; ! •- • : . -. }• - : - Li .. , ■ \* 1 A/ A^
