COMMERCIAL.
The following are the Customs returns for the week ending June llth, 1870 :—
Messrs M'Landress, Hepburn and Co., of Dnnedin, held then- periodical Bale of flax on the 6th inst. The inclemency of the" weather prevented the usual full attendance of buyers, and in consequence the sale was languid. Unscutched flax is now quite unsaleable, buyers will only look at the best dressed samples. Of the 50 tons catalogued, only the following hues were sold : — ASHB 15 bales scutched flax, at £19 per ton H 5 do do do 19 do S s: 15 do do do 14 15s do, inFs ferior sample.
ItXTJBOV-RXTB. The Argus of the 6th inst. reports': — ** In the import markets there has been little business doing throughout the forenoon. The arrival of tbe mail steamer was telegraphed at an early hour in the morning, and as usual under such circumstances, no attempt fo effect sales, except for the supply of immediate wants, was made thereafter. The advices fo hand, as far as can yet be judged are, we are glad to observe, of an exceedingly favorable character. The exports to Victoria once more, and now for the third month running, show a decline of £81,000. This continued decrease is all the more satisfactory as ordinarily at this time the shipments of eea son's soft goods have helped to swell the exports by at least £100,000 to £150.000 more. In breadstuffs to-day we have nothing to refer to in the way of sales. Quotations rule steady at £11 to £11 5s for best brands of Victorian flour. Wheat is saleable at 4s lOd to 6s, according to quality. Oats are maintained at 3s 2d to 3s 4d. Maize has declined to 4s 6d, and the week closes with somewhat of a dull market. Malt is difficult to quit ; prime samples are offering at 8s 3d to 8s _id, but buyers do notcaTe to operate freely with such a heavy stock on the market. Salt is in fair trade request at £4 15s to £5 for coarse and fine. Sugars are not mucb. sought after. Various parcels will be offered for sale in the course of next week. We observe that on Monday a shipment of Natal produce, per Tien Esser, consisting of sugar, rum, cayenne pepper, arrotfroot, and aloes, will be submitted to public competition. All of this consignment is in very prime order, and will be found most suitable for the requirements of the trade.
