March 17. The Eed Sea cable has been laid, completing the submarine communication between Bombay and Suez. The Duke of Edinburgh visited Lahore, Delhi,and Simla. He was present and assisted the Earl of Mayo at the inauguration of the last portion of the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, completing the line from Bombay to Calcutta. The Duke arrived at Bombay on the 11th. He met with a grand reception at the Liverpool of the East. Some small war steamers have been sent to the Persian Gulf to keep order in that disturbed region. The French are endeavoring to secure the port of Synn Bunda as a coaling sta-

tioa and depot in the Bed Sea. The Prussians also seek ta obtain a station on the Arabian coast. The proposed reductions in the Indian army will effect an annual saving of £400,000. It is reported that a virulent plague has broken out at Zan Bidara (Zanzibar?) A revolt has taken place amongst the Sepoy troops in the Portuguese service at G-oa, caused by reductions in the military and other departments. March 22. . There has been Dofnewflfrom the Bed Sea Telegraph Expedition for some days, cable was buoyed from the Chiltern on the I6fch. This "vessel is now awaiting the arrival of the steamers Hawk and William Corry, the vessels that are laying the cable from Suez to where the Chiltern now is. It is believed that bad weather causes the delay. March 23, 10 a.m. Captain Halpin telegraphs that he hopes hourly to effect the last splice to complete the communication between Bombay and Suez. He says he ia only Waiting till the fog clears up.
