Another of the Maori prisoners has died* Mr Stafford addressed his constituents atTitriaru last evening, when the following_^ resolutions ~were carried; _ unaramdiisTy, ~ viz. : — " This meeting begs to thank Mr Stafford for his address, and for his past services on behalf of the district and of the colony, and pledges itself to support him at the approaching general election. Further — The meeting desires to record its opinion that the present depression existing in the colony will not be wholly removed until some change is made in the present system of Provincial Governments, especially in the financial relations between the provinces and the colony, the present system tending to keep up taxation." A deputation waited on Mr Fox to-day. He consents to address the citizens on , Wednesday evening. April2s. The dinner to Mr Fox was a great sue. cess. It was attended by the two Judges, and a large number of the bar. The colonial prize firing takes place on Wednesday and Thursday. The news from Cromwell continues. encouraging. We take the following telegraphic summary from the Otago Daily Times : — Nelson, April 19th. At the races to-day there was but a small attendance, notwithstanding the fine weather. The following are the results of the several events : — Maiden Plate, li mile.— Mr Stafford's Mist, 1 j Mr Bedwood's .Songstress, 2. Four ran. Time 2min. 28sec. Turf Club Handicap, li mile.— Mr Redwood's Peeress, 1 ; Mr Stafford's Magenta, 2; Mr Stafford's Lacenfeed, 3. Four ran. Time, 3min. 20sec; The Waimea Plate and the Hack Bace were both won hy Mr Page's Rainbow. Ladies' Purse, li mile, in heats. — Mr Redwood's Misfortune thoroughly beat Mr Stafford's Rapid Rhone. Only two ran, and the race was a poor. one. Criterion Plate, f mile.— Mr Bedwood's Peere33 r 1 ; Mr Stafford's Lacenfeed, 2 ; Mr Redwood's Songstress, 3. Four ran. The racing generally was poor. •
