An event *of a totally different and more agreeable nature, came off yesterday "■■ morning, viz', the marriage of I). Murchie, Es<j.^ to Miss Inatone, sister of our esteemed townsman, M. The universal esteem in wluchbathl parties were held by the inhabitants gave the affair quite a gala-day aspect. The very best and gayest equipages the town could turn out received an extra brush-up for the occasion, and for the time being business was entirely suspended. The display of bunting, both from hduse--fronfcß and on the water, made .one ..wonder where all the flags could have come from. On, leaving the church, the party were saluted with a regular,/^: de. joie, which was kept up with little intermission until the residence of the bride's brother was reached. After the wedding breakfast had been partaken of by a select company of friends, the happy pair left for Invercargill, en route for Melbourne, amid many hearty good wishes for their future welfare. On St. Patrick's day our volunteers had their grand annual Tir local for the following prizesj viz., Eirst class— lst prize, a silver cup, value six guineas; 2nd prize, £3 10s; 3rd ■ prize, pencilrcase, valued at .£l . lQs, jajid 15s in caah, £2 ss; 4fch~ prize, a ring, value £1 jLQs, and 10s cash, £2. Another correspondent writes *as follows :^-A. case of cruelty Ito^imals was heard on Wednesday, the 16th,- at I;Tie Resident Magistrate's 1 Govtrb Duncan Campbell, the contractor for the mail, was summoned to answer to a charge of the above nature, when the Bey. W". P. Oldham and Mr Chapman gave evidence to his having peraistof in driving his horse in a coach while suffering from three great sores on its shoulders. Defendant pleaded* that he had had the collar altered since: 'first spoken to, but it wa» .clear that the animal could not be worked" without the greatest cruelty, and the Bench, Messrs M'Culloch and Nurse, infticted: a fine of 20s and costs, with a severe reprimand. It is high time something should be done to remind men that although in this rough country dumb animals are sometimes necessary sufferers, still, profit must sometimes be to humanity. ; r :^ ;
