From the Star we learn that by returns obtained from all the Ballarat banks, excepting the Colonial, which refuses to furnish returns, daring the month of January, 27,1470z. lldwt. 15gr. of gold were purchased in Ballarat This shows a large excess over the monthly average for the year 1869. In- that year the eight Ballarat banks purchased 285,6470z., or a small fraction under 23,9700z. per month, whereas the January returns of the seven banks alone, gave a increase of 31760z. 19dwt. 15gr., which 'if maintained will -give an annual totaTof 325,7700r. 19dwt. 12gr., or 40,1230z: 19dwt. 12gr. in excess of the total of 1869. And this, it will be borne in mind, exclusive of the gold purchased by the Colonial Bank, which, taking the average of the wren other banks, would be within a fraction of 3870z. 4dwt. I7gr. per month; or 46,5400z. 15dwt 4gr., swelling the total for 1870 to 372,3110*. lldwt. 26gr., or an increase of 86,664bi. over the Ufarn for the year 1869. ' t
