SOUTH AUSTRALIA.

Adelaide, Feb. 3. The G-overnment have announced their intention of issuing gold licences for three months free of the present licensefee. Mr Hornabrook, landlord of the York Hotel, is seriously ill from sunstroke. The corn market is depressed, owing to Californian advices. Sales of wheat are reported at ss. for export. Feb. 4. In the Legislative Assembly the G-overnment were again defeated, on Mr Hart's motion, refusing to go on with the Estimates until a Special Supply Bill was brought in to pay the salaries already due to the civil servants. A Special Supply Bill was afterwards passed for £100,000. The Customs returns for the past quarter show the imports amount to £794,000, and the exports to £938,000. The total reduction made by the Legislative Assembly in the Estimates is over £40,000. A good deal of excitement was occasioned to-day at some fine specimens of reef gold from Blumberg, which were exhibited at the Eaglish and Scottish Bank. One nugget weighs 14oz. The corn market shows no ill effect from the receipt of the Californian news. Sales of wheat are reported to-day at ss. o|d., and of flour at £12 to £12 10s. Feb. 7. A man was killed on Saturday at the reservoir through sunstroke. . The sum of £900 in Sydney bank notes has been found in the Alberton cemetery, concealed behind a tombstone. It is believed to have been planted there by the owner some years ago when visiting the colony, and he was afterwards unable to find the spot where he had placed them. Feb. 8. It is reported in town Ip-day that the G-overnment Eailway employes have received notice that a reduction of their wages by 10 per cent, is to be made. 6 p.m. — In the House of Assembly this afternoon the Treasurer submitted his new tariff. He proposes to place on the list of free imports the following articles : — Canvas and bagging, lamp oil, empty casks, iron, steel, pitch, tar, resin, quicksilver, tin, damaged tobacco, and timber in logs. On rice he proposes a duty of 2s ; salt, £1 per ton ; and oil in bulk, 3d a gallon. Feb. 9. The Treasurer's new tariff is not likely to be carried. In addition to the present free list he only adds quicksilver, and the general opinion is that a more extended free list should be adopted He proposed to place 2s on rice, Is on salt, and 3d per gallon on oil and kerosene. The G-overnment are issuing gold licenses, available to the end of June, for j 6d, with a view to encourage prospecting. New specimens are being daily brought to town, and the excitement continues unabated. The annual cost of the Northern Territory staff is estimated to be £8,600. { In the wheat market 5s 2dis offering for wheat, but no parcels of any extent are coming forward. The Hon. John Hart, member for Light district in the House of Assembly, ;who has been seriously indisposed, is now better. ..... . ■ . Promoters' shares of £50 each, in the Blumberg G-old Mine, have been sold at £130. Some more specimens have been shown, but they are so rich that people doubt the genuineness of them. In the Assembly this afternoon, Mr Daniel Fisher gave notice of motion of want of confidence in the Ministry, but the Speaker ruled it out of order, there being jio seconder.

In the Council, Mr Baker's motion informing His Excellency the Governor of the recent vote of want of confidence was carried by a majority of one. The Governor visited Parliament today, and assented to 18 bills, including the Supply Bill. Feb. 10. The shares in the Blumberg Goldmining Company are quoted at £140. It is proposed to present a testimonial to Councillor Raphael for his exertions in establishing the City Market. At the nomination to-day, Mr Pickering and Mr Coglin were nominated for "West Torrens, Mr Blyth and Mr Spicer for Sturt. The Register, in a leader" to-day, Btates that the question of the period is, " HowSouth Australia shall act towards Victoria ; shall we retaliate by introducing taxation on potatoes ?" The com market is very firm ; 5s 2d | offering for wheat, but none offering. • A long discussion took place in the Assembly on the land question, and the general feeling was in favor of adopting the new Victorian law- The revised tariff of the Treasurer was thrown out without a division. A motion that the House immediately adjourn was (Sarried against the Government by a majority of four. Feb. 11. An accident befell Mr Bagot, the Chief Secretary, to-day when returning from "Woodhouse, whither he bad been to see the Governor, after yesterday's adverse vote in the Assembly. He was thrown out of his carriage, and is stated to be seriously hurt. The Assembly stands adjourned till Tuesday, to allow the Government time to decide what course they will pursue. A dissolution is considered most probable, as the present state of parties in the House gives little promise of any other Ministry commanding a good working majority. . Great preparations are being made tor the annual agricultural show. The libel case of Solomon v. Daniel* has been adjourned till Tuesday. The case arose out of expressions used by defendant during plaintiff's candidature for the mayoralty. Wheat is firm at 5s 3d.
