"William Martin was at one time a book auctioneer in Edinburgh. He was no great scholar, and occasionally made some humorous blunders during the exercise of bis avocation. One night he had made a clumsy attempt to unravel the title of a French book. A young dandy, wishing to have a laugh at Martin's expense, asked him to read the title again, as he did not quite understand him. "Oh!" said Martin, " it's something about manners, and that's what neither you nor me has ower muckle o\" Wise men learn more by fools, than fools do by wise men. A man being asked why he talked to himself, candidly answered, " Because I like to converse with a man of sense."

rpENDERS will be received by the undersigned | -*- until noon on TUESDAY, the 24th inst., for the collection of the Agricultural Statistics of the province in the undermentioned sub-districts : j —Oteramika, Roslin, Waikivi, Waihopai, and New River. All holdings of one.^acre and upwards under crop must be visited by the Sub-Collector j and each tender must be accompanied by satisfactory reference as to competency to perform the work. The lowest nor any tender not necessarily accepted. D. MACRORIE, Superintendent Collector.
