f Jn> » «. jUWmfcra. arrived in Hobson'a Bay on the 10th inst., in tow of the tug steamer Resolute, something being wrong with her machinery. She was spoken off Wilson's Promontory by the steamer Murray, but in consequence of the gale the latter was not able to give any assistance to the Alhambra, but on her arrival at Cape Schanck the captain telegrapher! to Messrs M'Meckan and Blackwood, who despatched the tug to her relief. The steamship Tararua, Jas. Hagley, Commander, arrived at the wharf from Melbourne at 2 p.m. yesterday. She left Hobson's Bay at 7 p.m. on the 20th instant, and experienced fine weather until she sighted SoJander Island — from tbeDCe strong south east ga)e with thick weather. She brings 50 tons of general cargo for this port ; has 365 tons, 15 saloon, and 148 steerage (including 70 Chinamen) for Dunedin and other New Zealand ports. She will ail. for Danedin and Northern ports at daylight this morning, 26th). The favorite steamship Great Britain, with her wonted punctuality, has again arrived in port from Liverpool, after 61 days' passage, in which s'ie encountered strong adverse winds during the greater part. Some idea of the contrary weather met with may be inferred from the fact that she was 38 days under steam, and consumed 200 tons more coal than her usual average quantity. The widespread popularity of the ship and her gallant commander is again fully acknowledged by the number of passengers who have come out in her, namely, 81 in the saloon and 450 in the second and third cabins. Amongst her chief cabin pasBengeTs are several old colonists, who have returned to Victoria after a visit to the old country, and she has also brought out a number of warrant passengers. The ship wag telegraphed off Cape Otway at 11 o'clock yesterday forenoon, and shortly alter 5 o'clock in the afternoon she entered Port Phillip Heads. After the usual detention at Queen scliff, she steamed up the South Channel, and anchored in the bay at 10 p.m. In the matter of clearing this large vessel, with so great a number of passengers, considerable promptitude and forethought were displayed by the immigration ag nt, Mr L. A. Moody ; the senior immigration officer, Mr D. W. Gosset; and MrKichard Craven, lepiesentative oi the ship's agents, Messrs Bright Brothers & Co. These all left the bay at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, in the s.s. Aldinga, and were aueces-f ul in boarding the Great Britain at Queens- • cliff, and the work o£ clearing the good old ship with her living freight was successfully accomplished on the passage from the Heads. Since her last visit to this port there have been some changes amongst her officers — Mr Chapman, her late chief, having been placed in command of the Alsagar, one of Messrs Gibbs, Bright and Co.'s ships, Mr Lawrenson, who was second officer last voyage, has been promoted to the chief officership ; and Mr Christie is now second officer, while Mr Congdon and Mr Dusautoy are third and fourth officers respectively. Dr Puddicombe has again come out in her ; and the engine-room is, as before, in charge of Mr Meadon ; while the purser, Mr Unsworth, " the oldest inhabitant" on board, still efficiently discharges the functions of his office. The ship left Liverpool at ten minutes to 4 p.m. on August 12, and crossed the equator on August 29, in long. 18deg. 12min. W. The meridian of the Cape of Good Hope was passed on September 16, in lat. 39dee. 43min. S., and Cape Otway was signalled at ten minutes to 11 a.m. yesterday. Captain Gray, it is gratifying to mention, is in the best of health, and looks as if he had renewed his lease of life. The utmost despatch will be used in getting the ship discharged, and loaded again for the return voyage. — Argtts, Oct. 14.
