Commercial News.
Times Office, Thursday Evening. There is little alteration in commercial matters to note. Since our last summary, business has still continued quiet, anything like animation cannot be said to have existed, nor can we look for much improvement now until spring fairly sets in, when country orders are sure to be more frequent, and more extensive. Most descriptions of merchandise are plentiful at current quotations, and in the case of flour, considerable additions to stocks in first hands have recently been made. The sale of sugars, ex Dunloe, from the Mauritius, held in the adjoining market of Dunedin, and resulting in high prices being realised, viz. : —For fair yellow crystals, £42 12s 6d to £43 10s. Some lines of lower crystals, £39 15s and upwards ; fine whites not allowed to go at £46 ; offers of £43 10s to £45 for medium whites, not accepted. Other general commodities stand at nominal rates, and call for no particular remark. . The works on the Oreti line are advancing. The whole of the material has now arrived at the port, and the greater portion of it has already been brought up to town. About two and a-half miles of rails have been laid, and the length is daily increasing. Ballasting is also going on. With the advent of spring, we believe, the contractors intend employing a much larger number of men, and pushing on the undertaking rapidly to a conclusion.
♦ By the arrival of the s.s. Tararua, we are in receipt of Melbourne files to the 28th ult. The Argus' of that date has the following commercial article : — In the import markets this forenoon, business was quiet, and the day's transactions were of an unimportant character. Values of breadstuffs are steadily maintained; sales, however, are on a trifling scale. Best brands of country flour are quitted at £13 10s, and up to £14 is required for town-made flour. Wheat is fiim at 6s 2d to 6s 3d ; there is, however, little offering, and only small parcels can in consequence be placed. Oats are also very firm ; good samples at 4s 2d being wanted. IVJaize is the turn in favor oi sellers ; sales have been made at 4s 3d, and we understand a penny more is asked. In liquids, we note the disposal of a shipment of the
Carlisle Company's bulk ale ; the price paid has not been disclosed, but we understand that a eoneeasion on our trade quotation of £8 had to be allowed. A shipment of Worthington'B ale, just to hand, has been cleared out on terms withheld. A line of Portland cement was taken up at a shade under 17s.
