THE RACES.

FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 1869. » (by ovr own eepobteb.) SECOND DAY. 'The heavy gales of yesterday having entirely subsided, a beautiful morning, with just sufficient wind to keep the atmosphere at an agreeable temperature, promised to make up for the unpleasantness of the preceding day, and was the cause of a larger attendance, both of horsemen and vehicles, than on the first dajf. The racing, too, was much better, especially as regards the Handicap, the Stewards profitting by the experience of yesterday's trials,; bringing them well together at the- finisn. ' Of the events upon the card the MwMS^^<^r^^]^ :^^^nt6 one with the 'ra'ceigoing public was first, when the thr^eflorsee entered J appeared at' the •eratoh. This event terminated after a

i very quick run — a well contested race ■ in favor of Terror, who led away from the s post and was never collared. Beneeia ■ Boy. after the second lime passing the po.-il, being out of the race, when Wallace i put on .1 spurr, but waa unable to reach i home in the vanguard, coming in about > six len-^LiiS in i :h > rear of Terror. ! The next, r.u-e was the rive of the meet; I^. Br.jo who had not as yet , made nis a^vurance on the course had 'to ear.--' Mr> to;) weight (owing to his vielui'.t.'s vi) iVorth) which proved too much [\>i- him, never being able to show in tne t out, Postboy and Loehiuvar getting away at a racing pace, closely followed by Nelly Grey, the others goiug in a Chester for the first mile. This position was maintained. Nelly Grey here put on steam, passing Postboy and Lockinvar, who retired and gave place to Penelope, a game little mare. Half ;i i mile from home a struggle took place, i but Nelly Grey came in first by h ! length, severely punished Banjo, a bad third — rest nowhere. The Trotting Race came next, but as both the horses entered were in the same name, no excitement was shown as to the result, Jackey beating the old horse, who showed great want of condition. The Consolation was won by Baujo, fully proving what weight Avill do, beating a field of four. A Hack Race of 10 soys., was again won by the Bird, winner of the previous day's race, which, in my opinion, ought not to have been sanctioned by the Stewards. The winners of all Hack races are generally barred from running again the same meeting, os it causes less sport, aud is the means of causiug fewer entries. Handicap Httkdle Back. Value 40 soys. Open to all horses. Distance, 2-h miles. Over nine flights of hurdles, 3 feet 9 inches high. Entrance, 2 soys. Mr William's Terror, lOsfc lib (Owner) ... 1 Mr Sutherland's Wallace, lOst lib (Edgar) 2 Mr vi'Meniiuan'sßenecia ßoy, 10s lib (Lambert) 3 This was a fast race, Terror leading off was first to take the timber, Beneeia Boy closely followed by Wallace, well up. In this manner they run until the second time round, when Benecia Boy gave way to Wallace, Terror still keeping the lead, and came in first by 6 lengths, same distance between second <w\d third. Ikvekcargiix Handicap. Value 20 soys., with a sweepstake of 4 soys. each added. Distance 1\ miles. Entrance, 4 soys. ; half forfeit if declared after weights are published. Mr Gr. Smith's Nelly Grey (Williams) ... 1 Mr Pollock's Penelope (Koliy) 2 Mr Howell's Banjo (Howel!) ... ... & Mr Hare's Post Boy (J. Smith) 4 [ Mr Hill's Lochinra'r (G-. Smith) 5 This was a good race, Baujo being the favorite, but the weight telling in a long race, proved his inability to give Nelly 141bs, as he was unable to show in front. Lochinvar and Post Boy led away with a good lead, followed by the grey, rest altogether ; they ran in this way past the stand the first time, when JSfelly drew ahead, and took the inside running, which she held throughout, Penelope putting on a spurt half a mile from home, aud after a game struggle for first honors had to succumb, being beaten by a short length. Banjo bad third. TB.OTTCNG- RACE. Saddle or harness, 25 soys. Distance, three times round the course. Entrance, 2 soys. No weight under ten stone. Mr G. Smith's Jackey... ... ... ... 1 Mr G. Smith's Banger 2 This was a hollow affair, Jackey winning by several lengths, the old horse evidently wanting condition. CONSOLATION HANDICAP Of 20 soys. For all beaten horses during the meeting. Distance, once round the course. Entrance, 20s. Banjo (G. Martin) .. 1 Allander (E. Reins) .. 2 GHendyne (A.. Kelly 3 Rockavay (T. White) 4 Wanderer (W. Edgar) 5 Banjo was again the favorite, and did not disappoint bis backers, showing that it is the weight that kills. Banjo and Rockaway led off full steam on for inside place, Banjo succeeding, held his own all through, corning in first by half a length, two lengths between second and third — rest nowhere. HACK EACB. Value 10 soys. Hanna's eh. m. Bird (A. Birchail) ... ... 1 Just previous to this event coming off, the rain, which had been threatening all the afternoon, began to come down, causing a stampede for home, so that by the time 'the three beats were got through, few were left on the course. As on the previous day, everything passed off without accident, with the exception of one or two capsizes, caused more by the foolhardine3S of the driver than anything else. An attempt was made to sell the booths by auction, but owing to the bad weather, I, amongst others, did not stay to hear if a sale was effected or not.
