THE EDITOR OF THE 'SOUTHLAND NEWS' AND THE MEMBERS OF THE NEW EXECUTIVE.

(to the editob oe the southland times.) Sic— The ' Southland News,' which of late years has gained so much unenviable notoriety for the coarseness of its language in speaking of the actions of public men has thought fit, in a series of articles which appeared in that journal recently, to attempt to write down by the most disgraceful and blackguard means, j certain gentlemen who have taken office j in the Local Executive. lam free to acknowledge that it is often necessary to use strong language in speaking of the action of politicians, but'it will generally i be conceded by all right thinking men that there should be a limit to this. The editor of the paper in question, it would appear, holds a different opinion. He evidently believes, in order to gratify personal revenge (which ! I understood is the case in this instance) that he can outrage with impunity the j ordinary rules of decency and good feel ing, and proceeds with the most unblush" ing effrontery to endeavor to intimidate those of his political opponents he most fea-s. But he will find himself very much mistaken if he imagines for one moment that he can accomplish this in the disreputable manner he seek.-*. His character is well known, and wheu he attempts to act the part of a censor of morals he excites but ridicule and contempt. — I am, Sir, your obedient servant, An Old Resident. Invercargill, March 6th, 1869.
