London, October 9. The Queen is still at Balmoral. Her health has much improved. She intends spending the winter at "Windsor. The Prince and Princess of "Wales have visited Glasgow. The Prince laid the foundation stone of the new college. They contemplate visiting Denmark. The Prince of Wales has refused to become a Freemason. The Duke of Edinburgh has resumed the command of the Galatea, and was to sail in November. He is expected to return to England in August, 1870. The August Australian mails were delivered in London on the sth oi October, via Marseilles. Sir Eoger Tichborne has sailed for Eio Janeiro. Sir James Ferguson leaves England in November. Mr Dv Cane sailed for Tasmania on the sth of October. President Johnson visits England in
lviarcn. Further Murphyite disturbances have taken place in Manchester. Murphy persists in his candidature for that city. Four more accidents have taken place on the Holy Head Eailway. Six months' pay has been awarded to the soldiers and sailors engaged in the Abyssinian .Expedition. One-half of the preliminary expenses of the Channel Eailway Bridge has been subscribed in France. Baden has been annexed to the North German Confederation. At Leeds, Mr Eeverdy Johnson expressed the hope that the existing differences between England and America would be amicably settled. Potato riots have occurred at Cork and Sligo. Cecil won the Cesarewitch Stakes. An explosion of fireworks has taken place at Barnsley, by which seven persons were killed. Jefferson Davis resides in London. The Eev. James Francis Turner has been appointed bishop of Grafton. The dean of Cork has been appointed bishop of Peterborough. The Social Science Association is holding its congress at Birmingham. President, Lord Carnarvon. An anti-ritualistic conference has been held at Manchester. Snowdrop won the Great Eastern Handicap. The proceedings at the Church Congress at Dublin were not harmonious. A claim has been laid by the Countess of Dervventwater to the Derwentwater Estate, which was forfeited during the Eebellion, and has since been held on behalf of Greenwich Hospital. The International "Working Men's Association, at Brussels, adopted a resolution calling upon workmen in all countries to suspend work immediately upon a declaration of war. Abyssinia has been divided into two parts. Gobazzey has been crowned Emperor of Gondar. Mr Gladstone has been a sufferer from English cholera ; but has recovered. It is expected tbat the Liberal majority in the new Parliament will be 136. Most of the Liberal candidates are in favonr of the ballot. Eumors of a great reduction in the army is prevalent. Lord Napier, of Magdala, has been invested with the freedom of the City of Edinburgb. Mr Charles Mills has been made a baronet in consideratian of forty-six years' service in India. The Guildhall, in the city of London, has narrowly escaped destruction by fire. At Hull, an eight-storey building fell, burying forty persons, of whom nine were killed. A terrible colliery explosion has taken place at Euabon, in North "Wales. Ten persons were killed, and eleven wounded. An accident has occurred on the NorthWestern Eailway, at Eugby. An engine and two carriages left the rails. Two persons were killed and five wounded. The Pope has issued a pastoral to the bishops ot the Eastern Church, lamenting the divisions that exist, and inviting the bishops to get together a council to remove differences, and to effect union with Eorae. He has also issued letters to the Protestant bodies, announcing that, in his quality of universal pastor, he has convoked a general council, and prays earnestly for their union with the Eoman Catholic Church. Homoeopathy has been prohibited in Eussia, owing to the many deaths that have occurred under the system. A fatal boiler exploison has occurred at Moxley Steel Works, near Bilston ; fifteen persons were killed. A boat containing five men capsized at Westminster Bridge. Eour were drowned. The Peninsular and Oriental Company's steamer Syria ran down a Cowes pilot boat, when all on board of it perished. Dr Livingstone, ifc is announced, is within nine weeks' march of Zanzibar. A suit has been commenced in the United States by the owners of the Sonora, against Mr Laird, the builder of the Alabama, for damages amounting to 119,000d01. The tidal wave appeared in Japan on August 14. Parliament has been prorogued to November 26.
The Society for the Propagation of the Gospel has voted £2,000 to the Church in Natal, which is to be independent of Bishop Colenso. Notice has been given that an injunction will be applied for. The new bishop of Natal has left England. A quakeress has been fined 10a in Manchester for pressing her claim to vote. A conspiracy has been discovered in Constantinople to dethrone the Sultan. The British ship Tom Volker has been blown up by an explosion of naphtha. Seven of the crew perished. The English cricketers have been successful in America. Alderman Lawrence has been elected Lord Mayor of London. The Deaf and Dumb Congress at Berlin has adopted a new alphabet. An earthquake occurred at Constantinople on the 17th of September. It is reported that the bishopric of New Zealand has been conferred on the Bey. James. Eandall, rector of Newbury. A monument is in course of erection to King Alexander the Third of Scotland, in Fifeshire. John Stuart Mill has subscribed towards the expenses of Odgers and Bradlaagh, the working men's candidates. Anthony Trollope opposes Load Stanley at Lynn. The aboriginal cricketers leave England on the 23rd of October. At a representation of the siege of Magdala, at Astley's, the fireworks exploded, and two soldiers were wounded. A steamer has been lost in the South Seas, and six persons drowned. Two persons have been burned at Newcastle, by the ignition of oil. Disturbances took place when Father Ignatius preached in Lombard-street. At the Tir National, at Brussels, 400 English volunteers took part.
