Not. 14. The Balmain regatta was a great success. Yivandiere won the Yacht Bace. The Rev M. Vidal, the incumbent of Christ Church, has publicly protested against the bishop's interference respecting matters which he considers do not come under the chief episcopal direction. The schooner City of Dunedin, loaded with maize for G-eelong, has been totally wrecked on Clarence Biver bar. The crew were saved. Mr Sutherland, the Commissioner of Public "Works, has been re-elected unopposed. At an auction sale to-day, inferior Java coffee sold at 6|d ; white pepper, 7d; black, 4d. The mate of the brig Henry has been sentenced to four months' imprisonment, for shooting at a seaman on board that vessel whilst at sea. The ex-Treasurer contradicts the statement made by Mr Sutherland, the new Commissioner of Public Works, respecting the insufficiency of the available funds at the Treasury to meet the current expenditure of the Government. The settling on the Homebush Baces has been very satisfactory. H.M.S.S. Blanche leaves this station for Auckland next week. Constable M'Cabte has died from the effects of the wound received from a bushranger. There has been a heavy gale along the co-st for two days. Wool is very dull. A proposition has been made to hold an intercolonial exhibition here in the course of the next 18 months. The swindling Captain Ottems has left Cape York in his yacht, far the East Indies. A boy named Fitzsymons was killed in a fi^ht. Five persons were arrested for aiding and abetting in the fight. Markets quiet.
