On Monday morning at three o'clock the Maoris (ex-prisoners) entered Poverty Bay settlement, and burned numerous homesteads, and murdered, in cold blood, upwards of twenty-eight persors. Many others are, however, missing. Those who survived the massacre took refuge in Taranganui. Another attack was hourly expected. The whole country was in a blaze. Amongst the killed were — Major Briggs, wife and child, and servant ; Captain "Wilson wife and children, and servant ; Messrs Dodd, Pephart and servant ; Mr Nairn, wife, and child ; Mrs M'Culloeh and child'; Mr Caddie, Mr Peabury, Lieut. "Walsh, wife and children. Not content with merely killing their victims, the savages committed the most brutal mutilations on the dead bodies. Mrs Nairn, after being tomahawked, was burnt to ashes, amidst the yells of the Hau-haus. A number of those who escaped to Tauranganui have since been taken to Napier in the Tawera. . The Success also took a number of families on to Auckland. The whole of the surrounding country is in a state of intense alarm, and great danger. The more populous settlements in the vicinity are not safe from attack. There is urgent need for large reinforcements.
