WELLINGTON.
♦ The Success arrived at Wellington from Poverty Bay with most important but disastrous news. The intelligence brought to hand is that a town (name unknown)^ has been taken, burnt and sacked by th 6 rebels. The rebels were under the command of the Maori chief Kooti. Thirty-three settlers, including Captain Briggs and family, were barbarously murdered. The most bloodthirsty and horrible atrocities were committed on the Europeans. The scene which occurred on the taking of the town was frightful to behold. "Women were burned to death, and children of tender age were shockingly mutilated. Not content with the atrocities committed, the Maories flung the dead bodies of the women to the pigs. The escaped settlers arrived at Napier. The total killed is not known, but it is believed that twenty-eight Europeans and nine Friendlies is below the number. Further particulars directly.
