Much comment, both on the part of Magistrates and local journals, has been made on the efficiency of the police, The Sikh force is an utter failure. We deeply regret to learn the death by drowning of one of the Wesleyam Missionaries stationed at Canton, the Jtevd Mr Caldwell, who lost his life on Saturday, the sth instant, whilst bathing near Canton. Another name is thus added to the long list of fatal accidents in the treacherous Canton Kiver. It is with much regret that we have to announce the death of Captain Joseph Edye, C. 8., E. N., (late Senior Naval officerpresent in this port) which occurred at 8.20 a.m. on the 18tb. The deceased officer was 41 years of age, entered the Navy in 1842 and served through the Russian war, from which he received the medal and the order of the Medjidie of the sth class. He had also been awarded the Companion of the Bath for services in Abyssina.
