NATIVE NEWS.
Napieb, "Wednesday. Intelligence has come in from the northern portion of the province, that the Government force, 100 strong, under "Westrup and Wilson, sent down to intercept the runaways (the prisoners recently escaped from Chatham Islands,) has been defeated in a skirmish. Our forces met with the rebels, and immediately opened fire upon them. The fire was refcumedwith. effect. One native and one white man being killed on our side, and several wounded. The Government force ultimately broke and fled to the bush, leaving 80 horses and part of their provisions, clothing and accoutrements in the hands of the Hau Haus. The Hau Haus advanced upon Tauranga en route for Waikaremona, but were met at the former place by Eichardson's force. , A skirmish ensued, when the Friendly Native Contingent, under Eichardson, all bolted as soon as the first shot was fired. It is reported here that a frienaljT^chiethas gone over to the Hau Haus, betraying our plans and giving full information of our numbers to them. The Napier Volaafceer3 are going to the front. .>..-. The Hau Haus are said to be jammed in by the flooded state of the rivers, so that they cannot move freely. Nothing has been heard yet from Te Wairoa as to the movements of the force under Whitmore and Biggs. Great excitement prevails in the district, but it is hoped that the marauders may be re-captured before they spread general disaffection. ■Colonel Whitmore's party, and the Volunteers wno did such good service at Omaranui, are expected to give a good account of the rebels when they reach the scene of action. The rebels are said to be all well armed and confident in their own prowess. Their intention appears to be to march across the country and join the rebel rihes in the Wanganui district.
