RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
WEDNESDAY, 4th MARCH, 1868. (Before H. M'Culloch, Esq., B.M. I David Jenkins was charged with stealing a cheque for the sum of £5 4s 6d, the property of one Robert Brown. Eobert Cotton, accountant in the "Union Bank of Australia, produced the cheque which had been presented at the Bank and paid. A notice had been received by the Bank from a Mr Eobert Brown, of "Wantwood Station, to stop payment of the cheque, as it had been lost, but as he was not the drawer the Bank could not comply. Martin Connor, Constable of Police, stationed at Winton, deposed that from information he received of the loss of the cheque he made inquiries, in the course of which he saw the prisoner and asked him how he came by the cheque he had paid to Mr Lampert. Prisoner stated he had found the cheque on Mr "Wentworth's station, and said he> would
make good the amount if witness would I receive it. The witness, however, refused to do so and I arrested him. The case was then adjourned for a week for the production of further evidence.
