IMMIGRATION.

(TO THE KBITOtt OF THB SOtTTHLiIO) TltfEfl.) g IBj — Xt appears that the Provincial Government are about re-commencing assisted immigration. I do Hope that they will give all parts of the United Kingdom a fair share of the advantages of assistance. I believe Dr, Menzies lost the opportunity of ever be« coming popular, by his bigotry in exert" ing himself to make this a class settle* inent, instead of a province that should be open to all comera* — I am,, [The usual course adopted in Victoria, we believe, is alternately to lay a vessel on the berth at London, and Glasgow*, so that inhabitants from all parts of Great Britain may avail themselves of the opportunity of emigrating. No doubt the same rule will be pursued by the Provincial Government. Further, the assistance offered is not of the nature of a bonus, but simply an advance of a certain portion of the passage money, on easy terms, to the intending emigrant, on the security of bis friends in this colony. The system cannot possible be answerable for the nationality of all or any of the immigrants, that lies entirely with the inhabitants of the province. The advantages offered are open alike to all. —Ed. S.T.I
