— ■* ♦ By the arrival at the Bluff of the s.s. Tararua, on Saturday, we are in possession of two days later news -from Melbourne. The Argus of the 27th ult. says :— In the inport markets, a good deal of activity prevailed during the forenoon, and in breadstuffs a firmer aspect was presented, a considerable demand for Victorian flour having been experienced; but as, under any circums: ances, buyers are careful not to purchase beyond actual trade requirements, prices are Uttle influenced thereby, and no change can be reported in consequence on our quotations of £15 to £15 10s. Wheat is steady at 6s 9d to 7s for good samples of old. New wheat is coming to hand in fine condition, and sales are beginning to open out at 6s 3d. Maize is disposed of in trade parcels at 3s 9d to 3s lOd. The speculation in candles referred to va. this morning's issue haa resulted altogether in 18,000 boxes changing hands, and as every box to arrive and on the spot which could be got hold of was picked up, we understand a considerable advance on the price hitherto ruling will now be required.. A parcel of gunnybags has been placed at our quotation of 8s 6d. In spirits we note sales of geneva to the extent of 1.70U cases V. H. and Co., and 1,000 cases JDKZ at very full figures.
