Shobt-Hobk Cattlb job Nbw Zealand. — A. great sale of short-horn cattle took place in the neighborhood of Braybrook, Victoria, on the sth instant, at which three bulls and thirteen cows were purchased for gentlemen in this colony, one of whom was Matthew Holmes, Esq., of Otago ; but the other names were not stated, as the purchases were made on commission. The entire herd consisted of fifteen bulls and fifty-nine caws and heifers, all of the celebrated Butterfly breed, but crossed with other strains of blood of the highest excellence. The herd was owned by Messrs Morton, Brothers, and Le%ch, who are returning to England, and before it was broken up was admitted to comprise the highest class cattle in Victoria. The bulls sold at prices ranging from 40 guineas to 151 guineas, the average price realised being about 85 guineas. The cows and heifers brought prices varying from 30 gnineas to 175 guineas, but the average price was scarcely bo high as that of the bulls. The Otago Bab.— The Argus of the 7th instant, has the following : — " The well known barrister-at-law, Mr Thomas Parsons, has retired from the Otago bar with the intention of returning to Victoria. He gives his reasons in a printed pamphlet, addressed to the people. of Otago. We are told ' Resist the devil, and he will flee from you,' but Mr Parsons states that he has tried it, got worsted in the encounter, and does not mean to try again. It is comforting to hear one of the legal profession admit that at last he has found his match, and he shall tell his defeat in his own way : — ' I decline place, and I decline foulness. Nothing remains but to compound with destitution. The contest with Satan has become too wearisome, and, what is worse, beyond my dilapidated faculties. He is getting me under. His arms grow longer ; mine shorter. I have no longer health or strength to give him one from the shoulder at every turn ; and he increases, and I am vanquished !'
