IMPORTANT NEWS FROM COLLINGWOOD.

l I (From the Nelson Examiner JSxira.) ■;•:.•■ - Saturday morning. )-; The following communication from a correspondent at Collingwood, who is .perfectly reliable, should have reached us last evening : — In consequence of some very rich ground having been struck by Messrs. Washbourae and Toms, in Appo's Gully, their application for a lease has been refused by the "Warden. Five experienced miners from Ballarat, Australia, have j commenced sinking a double shaft, bo as to be able to overcome the water ;_ they having full confidence of meeting with a deep lead of gold in this gully, such as has not been previously met with in New Zealand. This party of men were on the . eve: of leaving Collingwood, by the steamer Lady Barkly, for the Thames district, but on visiting Appo's Gully, were at once struck with the many peculiar features' it presents., similar to.' many of the richest diggings in Victoria. Gold has been struck in the Bhaft now being sunk at Appo's Flat, but the party fearing a rush, will not allow a prospect; to betaken. The gravel is treated in the shaft before it is sent up so that nothing, certain as to the richness of the seam of old gravel is known. Another eight-ounce nugget has been found at Eocky River, the lucky parties are ' Messrs. Samuel Berry and John Turner, who divided 72 ounces the other day, being the proceeds of a fortnight's work.. Berry and Turner have a lease, taken up when the Eocky was deserted.
