POLITICAL— GENERAL.
The G-eneral Assembly is still in ses^ sion. deveral important measures have already been passed. The Stafford Ministry is likely to retain office- — quite an unusual thing for a NewZealand Ministry," the average period of political existence being hitherto about twelve months. It is proposed to convert the whole of the debts of the Provinces and colony into one New Zealand stock, with the territorial and ordinary revenue as security for the repayment of the principal and interest. It is understood that Southland will again be placed in possession of a portion of her land revenue. There is every indication that a new era of prosperity will: gradually but surely develop the splendid resources of the colony. The fate of Centralism is sealed for the present. When the measure wa.3 introduced, after a very long and warm discussion, it was lost by a majority of nine. The ultra-Provincialists mustered in greater numbers than was at first expected. The subject will be again introduced next session. A complete abstract of the proceedings of the Provincial Council will be found in another column.
