DUNEDIN. Sept. 14th, lp.m. "Wellington, Thursday. — " Defaultera's Bill" passed Committee. Retrospective clauses struck out on suggestion by Grovernment that Bill would be otherwise amended. Second reading of the " Surplus Revenue Adjustment Bill" carried by 42 to 16. To-day a deputation of the Wellington and Nelson members waited upon the Treasurer to protest against those Provinces being saddled with Marlborough's debt. The Treasurer refused to make any alteration. Friday, 8 o'clock; Last, night the Hoase decided to go iuto Committee on the " Timaru Bill," by 28 to 22. Mr Moorehouse promised to do ample justice in Provincial Council, •and stated his intention to speak against time on every clause. His motion toreport progress was lost by 29 to 21.. At eleven a second division occurred, when the same motion^ was lost by 28 to 19. Mr Cox offered to adjourn to this day. Mr Moorehouse rejected offer. At 11.30 last night a compromise was effected. "When two clauses had been passed, an adjournment was agreed to until first sitting-day next week. September 17th, 1 a.m. Great excitement prevailed at Timaru on Monday relative to -the conduct .; of Mr Moorhouse in opposing the " Timaru Bill." His effigy* branded " Traitor to tlie South," was hung, and afterwards burned .on "the beach by a large mob. Monster indignation meetings to be held by population in favor of the Bill. If the Bill is thrown out ; proposals are to be made for annexation to Otago. i ■ Wellington,- ' Monday. — The • s.s. Otago ran into the wharf last night, doing damage estimated at £2,000. Vessel uninj ured. The " New Zealand Advertiser" was issued this morning as a daily paper, under a new name—" The Times.'' ,Mr Stafford presented a petition signed by 2600 persons in "Westland complaining of mismanagement in public affairs, and praying that an Act may be parsed erecting the .district into a separate province. . : ' '■■.} Finance 'Bill now in Committee. An adjournment for twenty-four hours' was strongly urged, in order to give time for receiving an expression of Canterbury.'s views on the subject, but the motion to that effect Was lost on the voices; The news from Auckland relative to gold discoveries encouraging. • A fire occurred at Nelson on Monday morning, at 2 o'clock, whereby a provision store, belonging to a Mr Hay, was destroyed; cause unknown- no one in the store since previous Saturday eveni ingl Insured in New Zealand Co. for £350. Bill was adjourned till to-day. Speaker declared objections valid. Stafford proposes the "Westland Petition be referred to a committee— to report in a fortnight!
