G-AZETTE," 28th AUGUST. - — : — - — « BEWABDS FOB THE DISCOVEBY OP ILLICIT DISTILLATION. It i 3 hereby notified that rewards varying in amount from Five Pounds' to Fifty Pounds will be iHven for such infermation as may lead to the detection and conviction of Persons engaged in Illicit Distillation. The Rewards will vary in amount, in proportion to the importance of the seizure, •will be payable immediately upon conviction being obtained, and will be, in addition to the portion of the fine or of the proceeds of the seizure, -which by law is to "be paid to the person affording the information. Information may be given to any Collector of Customs or officer of police throughout the .icolony. The name of the person giving the information will not be divulged except with his own consent J. C. it will be seen that the fourth section of the "Distillation Prohibition Ordinance, 1841," B 8, is now amended, and shall be read and construed as if the words "in the daytime" were omitted therefrom, and the words "at any time in the day or night" inserted in their place. The sixth section of the first-recited Ordinance is thus worded : — 4i If any perscm shall be found or discovered in Hie act of committing any offence against the said Ordinance, it shall be lawful for any Justice of the Peace, Officer of Customs, or Police Officer, forthwith, without warrant, to arrest such person, and detain him in custody until he can be brought before two or more Justices to answer to any information laid against him for a breach of the provisions of the aforesaid Ordinance." NOTICE The provisions of the " Dog Ordinance " must be strictly enforced ; particular attention is directed to the 9th clause, which states that " all unregistered dogs, or any dogs at large without the badge of registration, wheresoever lound by any Constable or any other person authorised in that behalf by the Superintendent, and all dogs, whether registered or unregistered, which may be found worrying, chasing, or baiting cattle, sheep, pigs, or other live stock, may be destroyed." . BTTBGLAB.Y. The Drapery Store of Mr W. H. Porter, in Esk-street, was burglariously entered on the night of the 29th, or morning of the 30th June, 1867, by violently forcing the holdfast of one of the back windows from its place, but nothing was taken. STEALING FEOUI A BEVELLING. Stolen from the Melbourne Hotel, Dee-street, sometime between the Ist and 24th June, 1867— one plain gold wedding ring, one gold ring with red stone, one brooch, containing large red stone, two white-handled pen knives (one of them had two blades, and the other only one) one small pair of plyers, with ear pick at one end, one pair of scissors, two silver thimbles, one silver bodkin, six lead pencils and one stamp — name, "J. B. Belaam." All value for £14, and can be identified. SHEEP STEALING. Stolen from Ladbrook Farm, on or about the 20th June last, 3 half-bred 6-tooth Leicester sheep, the property of Mr George Brown. CATTLE STEALING-. Stolen from the New Eiver Hundred, on or about the end o? March last, a red and white steer, 4 years old, branded GB on off rump. Also, a red steer, about 2 years old, branded B on off rump ; was last seen about the latter end of June last, the property of George Brown, of Ladbrook Farm, New Kiver Plains. Stolen from the New Eiver Hundred, on or about the 20th June last, a white bullock, branded IS on loin, together with other brands ; identifiable ; the property of W. B. Kingswell, of Invercargill. HOBSE3 EEPOBTED AS STOLEN OE LOST. About 12 months ago, from the Town Belt, Invercargill, a bay gelding, aged, about 15 hands 7 bi<*h branded AC near shoulder, snip on nose, the property of John Tarry, next Melbourne Hotel, Dee-street, Invercargill. About the beginning of May last, from the Town Belt, InvercaTgill, a bright bay mare, 13i hands high, branded CD in small letters on near side, under the saddle, the property of Allan Cameron, of Waikivi Plains. About four months ago, from Riverton, a bay horse, about 15 hands high, B on off shoulder, star on forehead, four years old, the property of the Eev Mr Clarke, of Riverton. PEOPEBTY STOLEN. Stolen, between the 27th June, and Ist July, 1867,' from an out-house at the rear of the Royal Hotel Eiverton, three hams, valued at £2 10s, the property of George Eowles. One of the hams marked with three cuts on the knuckle. BEWARDS. To Constable Hawkshaw, for activity shewn in the speedy arrest of the offender John Brown, convicted of obtaining money by false pretences, and sentenced to 12 months' hard labor. £1 has been awarded. • The sum of £3 has been awarded Sergeant O'Kee fe, for special vigilance and ability Bhewn in bringing the offender John Wiltshire to justice for stealing from the person, convicted and sentenced to 18 months' hard labor. »
