THE RAILWAY PETITION.
The following correspondence has been handed to us for publication. It will be seen that His Honor the Superintendent is doing all in his power to promote the railway movement : — Electoral Committee Eooms, 15th July, 1867. His Honor the Superintendent. Sic, — I have the honor, by direction of the Southland Electoral Association, to transmit to you the petition of the inhabitants •of Southland, and respectfully to request that you will forward the same to His Excellency the Governor, at the earliest opportunity. Your Honor will observe that the petition bears numerous and most influential signatures, and is a fair index of the almost unanimous wish* of the people of Southland that the railway works should be proceeded with without delay. It will also indicate that the late action of the Provincial Council, in not immediately accepting the offer of the Colonial Government, is contrary to the wishes of the great majority of the people, and hazardous to the best interests of the Province. — I have, &c, Louis Hume, Chairman of Committee. (beplt.) Superintendent's Office Southland 25th July, 1867. Sic, — I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 19th inst accompanying a memorial to His Excellency the Governor, from a numerous body of the inhabitants of Southland, on the subject of the construction of Bailways in this province, which I have forwarded to the Honorable the Colonial Secretary for transmission to his Excellency. It is, I think, unnecessary for me to say that I approve of the object of the petitioners ; for I have been earnestly endeavouring to forward that object for many months past, and, like yourselves, consider its attainment of vital consequence to our future prosperity. You may rest assured that nothing shall be wanting on my part to bring this matter to a satisfactory issue. — I have the honor to be Sir, your most obedient servant, Jno, P. Tatlok, Superintendent. Louis Hume Esq., Dee-Street
