April 8, 10.30 a.m. A public meeting was held in Prince's Theatre on Saturdaj to consider the position the city has been placed in by 1 the action of the G-eneral Government | relative to reserving the ordinances, also i to take into consideration the relations | generally between the Provincial and I G-eneral Government. The attendance i was not large, some speeches were very inflammatory. The inquiry on Princes-street fire is adjourned to Thursday next. The inquiry into wreck of South! Australian to-day. Wellington Telegrams. — The Bank of Auckland stopped. The steamer Queen left for Nelson on Friday evening to be hove down. At midnight Btruck on a rock near the Brothers, quickly drifted off. "Water rose rapidly. In half-an-hour went down in sixty fathoms. The crew took to the boats and made for Tory Channel where the Airedale picked them up and arrived in Wellington on Saturday. She is wholly uninsured. A destructive fire took place on Friday night in Christchurch. It originated near Cookhain House in Bishop's stable. Gutted the premises of Jameisons, the grocer; Coates, the watchmaker; Philips, the draper ; Lane, the butcher ; Dyer, the tobacconist ; Gee, confectioner. Estimated loss £12,000. 9th April, 5 p.m. The official enquiry into the wreck of the s.s. South Australian commenced today, and now stands adjourned until tomorrow. Wilmot, the commedian, imitated the dress and appearance of Mrs Watters the publican's wife, the other evening in the burlesque of "Lucia di Lammermoor." Watters afterwards thrashed him, and was fined five shillings for doing so, the Magistrate at the same time strongly condemning Wilmot's conduct in the matter. Wellington. — The shooting for the Government prizes has taken place with the following result : — First prize, gold medal, £100, and use of champion belt for the year— Corporal Chisholm, West Taieri. Second prize, silver medal, and £75 — Volunteer Lindsay, Wakari. Third prize, silver medal, and £50, Fourth prize, silver medal, and £40 — Nelson Volunteer. Fifth prize, silver medal, and £20 — Sergeant Eichardson, Wakari. Thus Otago has won all the prizes except the fourth. Tlje Governor presented them yesterday* The Otago men were highly congratulated by his Excellency. Major Eichardson, Mr Stafford, and about 200 others were present. The Governor leaves for Picton to-morrow. ;
