(TO THE EDITOR OP THE SOTTTHI/AIfD TIMES.) It is rumored that Mr Dawson's services as Government Engineer are about to be dispensed with. During the time this gentlemen has been in the nublie service he has assiduously and efficiently attended to the duties of his office, and I believe I am correct in affirming that .not a single complaint has ever been made against him. It is cei'tainly a poor recompense, after years of valuable service, that he should be obliged to retire in favor of younger and less competent men. I think the Government ought to act with justice in this case, and not allow any consideration of favoritism to bias the merits of Mr Dawson, It is only by acting in a fair and honorable manner towards old and tried public servants that the services of efficient men can be procured.—l am., &c., Justice.
