THE BALL

Took place at the Railway Station, "which was specially altered for the occasion. Numbers of carpenters and decorators were for days engaged in boarding over the centre, sides, and decorating the interior of the building, and when all was finished a most magnificent ball room was the result. Some idea may be formed of the size of the apartment, when the proportions are mentioned as 60 x 120 feet. The room was tastefully decorated with flowers, evergreens, and flags, and the innumerable lamps interspersed amongst the foliage gave a most brilliant effect to the whole spectacle. The supper was provided by Mr P. Jones, of the Southland Club, and was of the best description. The music was under the direction of Mr Lloyd. His Excellency and suite were present, as also the officers of H.MS. Brisk, and there were nearly 400 persons present. The affair altogether was the most brilliant that has ever taken place since the Province was established, and it must be most gratifying to the people of Southland that the display was of such a nature that most favorably impressed His Excellency with the wealth and importance of the Province. The dancing was kept up with the greatest spirit until an early hour in the morning. Considering the short notice given to the contractors (Messrs ~W". B. Scandrett and Co.) for lighting the ball-room, we think the firm deserve favorable mention, there being no less than 1? chandeliers and over 120 lamps provided fcr the occasion.
