DUNEDIN.
(FBoat oub own|cobbeßPondent, Feb 19, 1867.) At length the frequently disappointed expectation of our citizens has been gratified, and we have an opportunity of seeing, lionizing? and doing honor to His Excellency the Governor. H.M.S. Brisk arrived at Port Chalmers on Wednesday night last. On Thursday His Excellency, accompanied by his suite and the Native Chiefs landed, and was received by the Mayor and Corporation of the Port, whose guest he became, and from whom he received an address, to which he gave a suitable reply. A procession was formed, and came on to Dunedin by road — a most beautiful and romantic drive. At the boundaries of the city the Mayor ane Councillors waited to receive the distinguished visitor, and here Was formed an immense and noble procession, consisting of the Eire Brigade (with us an excellent and prosperous institution bye the bye) with their engines and gear, — the various Friendly Societies with their banners and regalia, the 1 Trades Unions also with banners, and with emblems of their work, Ministers of religion, the Caledonian Society, members of the AthenOum and Chamber of Commerce, bodies of merchants and others ; then followed carriages, containing members of the Corporations, Port Chalmers and Dunedin, the Executive, members of Council, the Native Chiefs, and then His Excellency and suite in a carriage, drawn by six beautiful horses. Dunedin never before made such a display—all along the route houses were decorated with the graceful New Zealand foliage, flags and banners floated over every house, and spanned the streets at intervals. At various points triumphal arches were erected, aud the whole road-
way was lined with crowds of citizeneager to give a right royal welcome to the representative of our Queen. In Princes street the volunteers were drawn up in line, and finely they looked. Everywhere the deepest marks of respect were paid to His Excellency, and on his arrival at the new Provincial .Council Building addresses were presented to him from Corporate Bodies, Societies, and all kinds of Institutions, and at the close there was a dejeneur held in the large room of the new building, at which a large number of persons were present. In the evening the Governor attended a concert given in aid.of the volunteer band ! Since that day there has been nothing but holiday making. On EridayHis Excellency reviewed the volunteers, and in the evening there was a grand ball at which 800 persons were present. On Saturday the public. institutions were visited, and when at the gaol His Excellency commuted the sentence of a prisoner. Monday a levee was held, and in the afternoon a monster fete in aid of the funds of the Benevolent Institution was held at Yauxhall G-ardens. His Excellency will probably remain here during the week. A petition asking for Separation was presented to-day. The Governor's reply was very guarded. At the least the presentatian was in bad taste. The contest for the Superintendency will prove a severe one. Amongst sporting "men the odds are in favor of . Macandrew, but it is hard to believe that the Province will so disgrace itself as to send in a man who was rightly in wrong — dismissed for irregularities — which have not yet been explained away — if it does— it will be the death blow of Provincial Institutions. The result of the elections for the Provincial Council will depend upon that for , the Superintendency. Mr J. Yogel has . received a numerously signed requisition from the citizens of Dunedin. The weather lately has been beautifully fine, and of course has been propitious for the occasion.
