INVERCARGILL RACES.

SECOND DAT. The wind was certainly less boisterous than the previous day,' but still quite enough to raise the dust. The number on the course, and more especially of ladies, was also in excess of the first day, owing to the far greater attraction both in the races and known qualities of the horses entered for each. The first race for the day was the Hurdle Eace. 20 soys. 2| miles, over 8 flights of hurdles. Weight for age. Mr J. Cox's gg Scotch Jock, aged, lOst 41b (Lafferty) - - . - - - - 1 „ H. .Howell's bg Princi* Plausible, aged, lOst 41b (Prince) 2 „ J. Pollock's Merrimac, aged, lOst 41b (R. Williams) - - - - - 3 Mr J. Douglas's Norval was scratched for this race, and Scotch Jock had it all his own way, taking his leaps without any trouble. * The rider of Merrimac had a fall, but escaped unhurt, and mounted again at once. Invercargill Handicap. One and a-half miles. 40 soys. . Mr Geo. Smith's b g Hatter, aged, 10st,41b (Weston) 1 Mr Laurie's eh g Eclipse (Lambert) - - 2 Mr Shirley's b g Post Boy (Edgar) - - 3 Mr Clulee's Melton (Owner) - - - 0 The betting was on Playboy on account of his performance the day before and his weight iv this race, but a broken stirrup and bolting off the course deprived him of any chance. Ladies' EtrnsE. Por all horses. 25 soys. Once round. Gentlemen riders. Mr G. Smith's b g Hatter (Mi- M'Kellar) - 1 Mr Shirley's Post Boy (Owner) - - - 2 Mr A. Ma'theson's Maori, - - - - 3 Hatter, as before, held the race from the first — Postboy coming in a good second. Town Plate. 35 soys. 3 miles. Mr Geo. Smith's Hatter, lOst 41b (Weston) - 1 Mr H. Howell's Skyonian, aged, lOst 41b (Owner) - - - - - * 2 Mr Blyth's Carramut, 10st41b (Billalone) - 3 The other horses entered for this race were scratched before coming to the post, leaving it to Hatter and Skyonian, Carramut not having the slightest chance. This was by far the best contested race of the meeting. Skyonian being fresh had a great advantage over Hatter who had won the two previous races and now added a third to his list, Weston landing him a winner by half a length. Consolation Handicap. 20 soys. One mile and a quarter. For all beaten horses. Mr Cox's Harkaway (Lafferty) - - 1 Mr Laurie's Eclipse (Lambert) - - * - 2 Mr Shirley's Post Boy (Edgar) - - - 3 Mr Clulee's Melton 0 Mr Pollock's Lucy 0 Mr Matheson's Maori 0 The horses got away well together, but Harkaway by good management led well in at the finish. Hurry Skurry. For all horses. Won by Mr Lafferty's "Bones." After the race for the Town Plate, Hatter was put up to auction by Mr Jno. Munro. He was bought in for the owner at .£135. A bona fide bid of .£l3O was, we understand, made. Mr J. Cuff performed his duties as clerk of the Course in a highly satisfactory manner. Mr C. A. Eoss was thoroughly aufait, and exhibited the patience and calm temper indispensable to the euoeess of the important post of starter,

The whole of the days sport went off without the slighest accident to mar the pleasure. When it is considered that hundreds of horses and persons on foot were mingled pell mell, this says much both- for the orderly conductof those preseut and the effective supervision of the polico. In the evening Miss Juno presented to the jocky rider of the winner of the Ladies Purse a handsomely mounted riding whip, the gift of Mr Puettelkow.
