The_J._?rMce Herald, referring to the progress of the bridge over the Clutha, says : — "We regret to learn that the contractor for the Clutha bridge is experiencing great difficulty in driving the pUes in the bed of the rivex, some of the largest and strongest of the pUes spUtting under the pressure of the heavy • Monkey,' and as all spUt at the top are ordered to be drawn and rejected by the Tnspector, it is to be hoped such an obstacle may not exist across the whole breadth of the river." A case of " sticking-up" at Akaroa is reported by the Lyttelton Times :— Richard Rowe, jun, was proceeding from Akaroa to his home in ChUdren's Bay, and when about midway he met a man with a mask on, who made a stab at him with a knife. In warding off the blow his wrist was slightly cut, the knife also cutting through his coat and vest. A struggle then ensued, during which Rowe was robbed of his watch, sqad purse {»ntai__ng a small sum of money.
