WESTLAND.

The " Gray Eiver Argus " of the 29th says : — v In our last issue we mentioned that the miners and storekeepers ar Duffer's Gully had recently held a meeting for the purpose of forming an association to defray the cost of ascertaining whether or not a second bottom exists in that neighborhood, The solution of this problem is a matter of very great importance, and we seriously trust that the v. efforts to find it will not be confined to the locality just mentioned. We 1 ■ lieve that many persons of great experience in mining, and possessing a practical knowledge, of geology, incline to the belief that the 'true/ and consequently the richest bottom, has not been reached on any of the diggings in this district. If such be a correct opinion and the depth of the bed-rock be not too deep, there is a probability that the goldfields of Weatland will exceed in extent and value those of Victoria itself. Under any circumstances it is well worth wile to ascertain whether

a second available bottom does exist oi nofc. and ihus settle the question satisfactorily. We should much lika to see the 3 example set by the miners of Duffer's i Ghilly followed by those of other places. wherever, in fact, the first bottom has been exhausted. The expense, wliec divided amongst many, will not amount to much, and as the question is one in , which every minor is interested, there ought to be no difficulty in getting sub- ! scrip tions."
