THE LAKES AND DONSTANT.

The Dunstan correspondent of the "Daily Times," of the Bth October says : — At Manuherikia, things are also improving. Continued perseverance is doing wonders on the banks of the Molyneux, which are coming greatly into favor. The shareholders in the Frenchmen's claim have just divided a handsome divident to the tune of over £600 per share. The Hit or Miss and Enterprise Companies are getting out first-rate paddocks ; both expect to have a satisfactory dividend upon the completion of the washing-up. The news from the reefs at Skippers is of the most encouraging nature. Southberg and Co., are crushing away; the stone is turning out much better than was expected. Perry and Co. have also commenced crushing, their machinery works first-rate. The Scandinavian Company are pushing ahead. Carpenters are in great demand, the lucky few that are there are getting handsome wages. There is any amount of employment for this class of tradesmen. At Cromwell, mining matters are in a satisfactory condition. The new rush at the Lo^burn is turning out remarkably well, and were the supply of water only equal to the demand, the place would support a very large population. The Chinese population is increasing. John is said to be doing remarkably well, and hundreds are expected over from Victoria and jSTew South Wales during the summer. The Sluicing claims on the banks of the Kawarau Biver to the south of the town of Cromwell, are turning out extremely well, six to eight pounds per week a man being the ordinary dividend to shareholders. The terraces, at Hartley's Beach are also turning out well ; in fact, wherever you go, there is a decided improvement in mining matters; all that is wanted is an increase of population.
