The " Okarita Observer" sports the discovery of ci tensive grazing country on the West Coast. Our contemporary thus summarises the information he has received :— " We publish in another column a digest of a diary kept by two men who recently explored a considerable area of back country lying between Bruce and Jackson's Bays. They started from Lake Wanaka, descended the Haast Biver nearly to its mouth, and reascending it, prospected and explored the Burke and Clarke rivers, the former running into the Haast from the southward, the latter from the northward, or parallel to the sea shore. In the Clarke Eiver, •which is behind Bruce Bay or some part of the coast in tliat vicinity, they obtained some favorable prospects, but the chief result of their journey was the discovery of a considerable area of grazing country. They are now again on this side of the country, having come via Christchurch and Hokitika, and if able, or enabled, as they deserve to be, they will probably make an attempt to reach the district in a direct line from the s«-a-board, or prosecute a scheme which they suppose to be capable of accomplishment — the discovery i of a pass from the point which tht-y had previously reached, or some, point more to the north vrard into the Mackenzie country. They describe ' the saddle between the Wanaka and the Haast to he incomparably easier than that between Hokitika and Christehurcli, and are inclined to think that th?re may be an intermediate pass towards tho Mackenzie country presenting no inTincible dullcultjes."
